The House That Drinks the River
Visiting dignitaries are told it is a heat-recovery innovation. Ubek built a windowless hall to do its thinking, and the hall got thirsty. Opening Scene You hear the Thinking House of Ubek four miles out. It is a single note, very low, the sort of sound you stop noticing in a week and then cannot sleep without. It has no windows, because it has nothing to look at. It is nine hundred feet of brass and black stone standing where the water meadows were, and inside it, in ranks, is the apparatus by which the Oracular Throne now thinks. The Oracle does not live there exactly. The Oracle lives in eleven such Houses across the empire and is, the Ministry explains, distributed , which is a word that means nobody has to say where it is.
